韦伯1948年生于英国伦敦，父亲是皇家音乐学院的指导，母亲是钢琴教师。他从小便学习钢琴、小提琴和小号。1968年，他的处女作《约瑟夫与梦幻彩衣》伦敦上演成功以后，在音乐剧创作上就一直捷报频传。他1970年创作的《万世巨星基督》在伦敦西区连续上演8年，这是伦敦西区前所未有纪录。1978年，《艾维塔》公演，获当年7项托尼大奖；80年代他创作的《猫》、《歌剧魅影》其成功可以用疯狂来形容，成为音乐剧历史上里程碑式的作品；直到90年代,韦伯不败的神话仍在继续，凭借《日落大道》一剧又刷新了百老汇的票房纪录。岁月流转中由他谱曲创作的剧作每演必红，从《万世巨星》到《艾薇塔》，经《歌与舞》、《猫》、《星光列车》等到《歌剧魅影》，此一颠峰性成就过后仍有《爱的观点》、《日落大道》等10出已成经典的剧目既充分显示着韦伯历久麋新的天才创作力，也奠定了他在英美音乐剧界第一把交椅的地位和“舞台之王”的称号。
